September is Baby Safety Month
- Children should always ride in a back seat restrained in a car seat or safety belt
- Infants should ride in rear-facing car seats until they weigh at least 20 lbs AND are at least 1 year old.
- Children over 1 year old AND weighing between 20-40 lbs should ride in a forward facing car seat.
- Children ages 4-8 weighing between 40-80 lbs should ride in a booster seat using the lap AND shoulder belt.
- Children and adults weighing over 80 lbs should always use a safety belt.
Once you have chosen the correct seat for you child follow the installation instructions that come with the seat. Research shows that 3 out of 4 child safety seats are installed improperly. Child Safety Seat Inspection Stations are found in several cities across the United States. To find a station near you click on the following link http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cps/cpsfitting/index.cfm
For additional information on car seat installation using the latch system as well as ratings and videos on the ease and use of car seats by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration visit the following link http://www.nhtsa.gov/portal/site/nhtsa/menuitem.9f8c7d6359e0e9bbbf30811060008a0c/
One thing we learn as parents is that we are always learning. Being a parent is a wonderful and exciting experience. The more we learn about car seat safety the more we can do our best as a parent to protect our children.
